I first read this book when I was 11 years old in 2004. Rereading it again, I am struck by how profound its themes are: consciousness, morality, what makes us human. A child would enjoy the world of the rats and the sense of adventure; an adult would love the philosophy and the protagonist in her quest to save her children. Such a wonderful novel!

Really fine writing, can be enjoyed by adults also, as I did, as I am...er. . whatever. I enjoyed it even though I am no longer a "kid"!

Absolutely loved this book as a kid. The flashback to NIMH chapters were my favorite part because of how much it made me think about consciousness, even though I didn't really understand that at the time.

I read this every now and then and I always am so fascinated by the part where they describe the experiments they did to the rats in the NIMH lab. I love reading about science when it's written for people who don't get science; sort of like the mosquito dino DNA from Jurassic Park.
They made a BIZZARE movie of this too.

I remember watching this movie many moons ago. It creeped me out as a child, especially the scene with the owl. So when this book came across my daughter's read list for school I decided to read it with her. I couldn't put the book down! It was so engaging. The peril...the decisions that had to be made. And from the first chapter I grew fond of Mrs. Frisby. She is the type of mom we all become when our families are threatened in any way. I was almost in tears at the ending, because we all know who died in the end. BUT the thought that he sacrificed himself to save another is reassuring in itself. What an amazing book!

When a farmer's plow destroys her home, poor Mrs. Frisby, a widowed fieldmouse, is faced with a serious dilemma. In desperation, Mrs. Frisby seeks the aid of the super-intelligent former laboratory rats of NIMH. O'Brien's novel is a gripping tale perfect for children 8+.

This self-serious children's book involves the domestic troubles of Mrs. Frisby, with the intelligent rats of Nimh. Unlike other books, however, this one has an explanation for why the rats build elevators, plows and have electricity. Very enjoyable, although the ending made me think I need to read a sequel.

This perfectly balanced and carefully thought-out animal tale -- think "Cricket in Times Square," only more serious and suspenseful -- will enthrall youthful and adult audiences alike. All the more striking for its unusual (for the genre) protagonist: a brave, perceptive lady mouse who is a caring single mother to boot! Suitable for family read-aloud storytimes. A timeless story, one of the very best.
