Still an enjoyable series, although I thought it was too long, with a bit much of Arthur's side-trips. I was looking forward to learning more about the London Underground, and although there is some arcane bits tossed in, there could have been more about the "rails." (One of the better books in the series, The Water Room, had lots of interesting stuff about London's underground rivers.) I also found it too complicated and was disappointed in -- not so much the solution -- but what set things in motion that led to the killings. (Sorry, would have to include major spoilers to be clearer than that.)
Don't forget how incredibly funny these detectives and their band of misfit but loyal and not infrequently sexy detectives are. Fowler's bitter, twisted and hilarious takedown of civil service and ministerial robots is satisfying especially combined with the mayhem our two heroes leave in their wakes. Oh, there is also a cat and bumbling handymen, a mad scientist and a witch or two - well, try out two or three of these. Not all will please, but if you don't find at least one that has you chuckling with pure pleasure then maybe Fowler isn't for you. Burning Man and Victoria Vanishes are my favorites but Off the Rails and latest Tides are also wonderful. Yes, some are quite dark, but never unleavened by humor, warmth, and friendship.
New Series to me. A little bit mystery a little bit scifi. Quirke characters and London.
Fowler’s books run one of two ways for me. Either I’m right there with the author when he pulls off his dénouement, or I’m completely confused as to who—and why—the killer is. Unfortunately, this was the latter. I hope the next one is better.
I love Bryant and May. Why hasn't anyone else commented yet to say they do too? The author is great with suspense, I finally rode the London Tube so I like this adventure in particular, the detectives are so... eccentric like Ellery Queen. How to explain? There's some very strange thinking going into their conclusions, and a lot of luck, and they're just such good books. Also some are terrifying, this one not so bad.
