This romantic/drama film follows thirteen year old Henry Wheeler, who must deal with the realities and sorrows of adolescence while trying to care for his isolated mother. One day they are out grocery shopping when they encounter a man by the name of Frank Chambers, who claims that he needs their help and convinces them to let him stay in their home. It soon becomes clear that he is an escaped felon. This movie is based on a novel by the same name, and shows the humanity within people who have committed crimes as well as the human need for love and connection. I would rate this turbulent film 4/5 stars and recommend it to those seeking something different.

I knew this was going to be good--look at the cast. And then to see the film unfold? You think it's going one way but it isn't, and that's the joy of watching this film. Beautiful and subtle.

Tender beautiful movie. Excellent measured performances by the three leads combined with the attention to detail for the era and sound track. Includes a surprising level of tension as the plot escalates.

Wonderful movie. James Brolin and Kate Winslett are both brilliant in this adventure romance. I always forget that she is British because she does American accents so well. Nice twist to see the story years later and inspired casting of Tobey Maguire. Worth watching.

"Labor Day" is cleverly written whether it is a true story or not. The cast is strong with good performances by James Brolin and Kate Winslet. The two of them were very convincing in their roles. This is definitely a step ahead of most movies!

Excellent movie. The characters are very convincing and I was very sympathetic to the convict. I loved the ending.

Too little story, too many endings. Idiot plot!

[SPOILER ALERT] Police: Open the door slowly. Step our with your hands open and
above your head, palms facing forward. Convict to boy:
You're a fine boy, Henry.
Anybody who says otherwise
is not worth your time.
Convict to boy's mother:
I'd take 20 more years
just to have another three days with you.

(SPOILER ALERT) Letter from jail-breaker to boy's mom: I will understand if you choose
not to respond to this letter. However,
I am due to be released shortly. I am no longer young, but I have
plenty of good health remaining. And I'd like to live much
the same way we discussed that weekend back when
we thought we'd be a family.
your mother has remarried by now. But on the off chance
that she might be alone,
I wanted to ask you whether
I might write her a letter.
I promise you,
I would sooner cut off my own hand
than bring any more grief to Adele.
