Boring, boring, boring. I agree with papillon63 about the look on Scarlett Johannson's face. Maybe she keeps her mouth open all the time to show that she's a sexy actress and ready for ACTION if you get mt drift. I just think it makes her look stupid.

Beautifully shot, setting, costume, colors, etc. Didn't care for the story though.

If you read the book first, you might be disappointed with the movie. Important scenes were left out, esp. at the start. It makes certain scenes in the movie a bit confusing and lose their full meaning. There is too much focus on the sexual tension between Vermeer and Griet. The book was better. Plus, Scarlett Johansson made the 'retarded' facial expression way too much in the movie.

Truly worth for watching Colin Firth in one of his best roles. Supporting cast is very good as well. Johanssen does a good job.

I found this subdued, beautifully lit historical drama very entertaining. Admittedly, Johansson's almost nonverbal portrayal of the meek Griet was rather flat and one-dimensional, with her constant pained and petrified expression. Nevertheless, I was reminded of Cinderella, with the evil stepsister, per se, and the pinched-faced wicked old crone, (who was wise enough to realize that Griet's likeness and inspiration to her son-in-law put food on the table). Colin Firth as the brooding Vermeer and Tom Wilkinson as the lascivious Master van Ruijven were both spot-on.

A painting of a maid becomes one of the greatest ever created, but the story behind it is fraught with passion, suspicion and betrayal.

I really wish Scarlett would take that silly look off her face. One can look innocent without looking stupid.

This is a 3D movie.
Dull, dreary and dreadful.
Not to mention - pointless.
If you want to watch people scowl all the time, especially Colin Firth, tune in to this.
Awful.

This is a ficticious account of how and why Johannes Vermeer painted his famous " The Girl With A pearl Earring". The 17th century artist's famous painting has often been referred to as " the Mona Lisa " of the north.
In Delft Holland , 17 yr old Griet becomes a maid in the house of Johannes Vermeer , to support her family.Johannes soon becomes to realize that Griet sees the world in the same way that he does but the attempt to hide their inspiration of each other from his volatile wife , Catharina fails .Class and wealth fall heavy on the innocent girl. One of the greatest paintings ever created is completed but at what cost?

Master van Ruijven (observing Vermeer's portrait of Mistress van Ruijven): "Is this Indian yellow?" (Vermeer nods) Master van Ruijven: "Distilled from urine of sacred cows, fed only on mango leaves... You've glazed my wife in dried piss."
