In the tradition of Peter Matthiessen's Wildlife in America or Aldo Leopold, Brenda Peterson tells the 300-year history of wild wolves in America. It is also our own history, seen through our relationship with wolves. The earliest Americans revered them. Settlers zealously exterminated them. Now, scientists, writers, and ordinary citizens are fighting to bring them back to the wild. Peterson, an eloquent voice in the battle for twenty years, makes the powerful case that without wolves, not only will our whole ecology unravel, but we'll lose much of our national soul.

This book is from a highly respected Seattle-based writer whose style is very thorough and reasonably objective considering that the issue of wolf preservation is the "abortion topic" of wildlife management. Wolf Nation seems to be as much about the people who affect the well being of wolves as about the animals themselves and the quotes she selected are my favorite parts of the book. Washington State is described as a leader in wolf management and local readers here in Seattle will learn about many wolf researchers and advocates who are either local or who visit here frequently. Though the book is well written, it is not a particularly pleasant read as the topic is perpetually frustrating to those who believe that wolves should be allowed to thrive, certainly not eradicated - or even "managed" with hunts and radio collars. If you are thinking of becoming an active supporter of wolves this book is a must-read as it presents both the big picture and many details of wolf advocacy.
