VERY GOOD 1948 classic western movie - lots of fab cinematography (in fab Monument Valley setting) and interesting plot about the struggle between the fort leaders, and more.
And fun to see Shirley Temple at age 20; not a baby girl in this one.

Incredible scenery and revolutionary cinematography. Some of the scenes, such as the climax when the cavalrymen are lined up to charge the Apaches, are iconic: they appear like statues, or like men who have already died.
Story was quite good and believable until the end. They wrap the story up too quickly, and simply sweep the poor decisions of the Colonel (Henry Fonda's character) under the rug, and indeed glorify him in death. In fact, his decisions as a character were troubling, and directly led to the death of a significant number of men. This aspect of the story line was not very believable. Loses a star for this.

This was a great movie. Ward bond was in several of John Wayne movies!!! Great cast for this movie.

I'm no expert, but is this masterpiece not the first revisionist Western? I still remember how shocked i was that a studio in 1948 would allow the depiction of explicit slaughter of US troops by Indians. The one-sided battle continued for probably ten minutes and only concluded when the last of the Americans was exterminated. My guess is that only Ford could have gotten away with it, given the gravitas he accrued with his conduct in WWII.

My interpretation is Fonda (who is superb) intentionally sets the events in motion knowing he would be killed--dying would make him a hero/martyr; would be a final gift to his daughter, allowing her to marry the Lieutenant she loves; and, most importantly to Fonda's character, get him out of the obscure desert outpost he despises.

This is one of Wayne's best performances; his best are seemingly as villains or characters who are subordinate to others.

A courageous and powerful piece of filmmaking, arguably Ford's best, and clearly one of the greatest Westerns ever made.

Terrific movie with an all star cast. How can you beat a cast of Henry Fonda, John Wayne, Ward Bond, and Shirley Temple? John Ford recreates a Forte Apache in Monument Valley in Arizona. In this beautiful valley he recreates the West during the time of the Indian uprisings. It is an all out adventure of the U.S. Calvary against the Indians. A terrific story and a great recreation of the West.
P.S. Ward Bond was one of John Wayne's favorite actors. How many movies did they do together?

Gorgeous black and white Monument Valley photography. Fonda plays an arrogant s.o.b., a character apparently loosely based on Custer (& the Apache for the Sioux). I can't get enough of boozehound Victor McLaglen -- that guy was hilarious. He cracks me up in every John Ford movie I've seen him in.

This movie was entertaining but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”.
