Gil Cunningham and his new wife visit his mother, learn a great deal about early coal mining, and we learn about attitudes toward witchcraft and homosexuality in medieval Scotland. All these themes are woven into an exciting and intricate puzzle in which Gil and Alys solve several murders some recent and some several years old; and participate in the translation of a saint. I enjoy the knowledge of herbal remedies as well. The scots words are fairly easy to pick up from context, but a glossary would be helpful. In the next book in the series, Ms. McIntosh has given us an aid to understanding some of the language in her books, the website It's a great help.
