This book absolutely broke my heart as a I read it. A drive with her family ends with Mia in a coma. The book shows her aware of everything that's going on around her, including deaths of family members that were in the car with her. Flashbacks of memories show happier times, as she has to decide if she wants to stay alive and follow her musical dreams, or join family members who passed away in the crash.

While I was reading If I Stay, I was debating whether to give it four or five stars. After reading the beautiful ending, I couldn't give it anything lower than five. Besides the wonderful ending, I really like the structure of the book. The book is not split into chapters but time intervals. Each interval includes a description of what is going on in the present (the aftermath of a severe car accident) and then is followed by the main character's memories. The present and the past tie together really nicely. Both are necessary for Mia to decide whether she should stay, and live, or leave forever.

This was an emotional book to read. It was different to read a book based on a coma patients thoughts. It was a book impossible to put down, read it in one day. I really liked it and look forward to the sequel Where she went. I will read it again some time later. Its that good. Hope everyone enjoys this book and author. I plan to read more of her books.

Mia Hall, a seventeen year old cellist, thinks she has a normal life. She has a boyfriend, a cute little brother named Teddy, got accepted into Juilliard School. That is, until one February snowy morning, she and her family goes for a car ride, and instantaneously loses her beloved family. She has to make decisions on whether to stay alive, or join her parents and brother. A great book, may drag a bit in the middle, but overall gripping and compelling.

I’d put off reading this book for a looooong time, because it seemed capital-S sad, but, oddly, this was less upsetting than I was actually expecting. When you begin a book knowing that something awful is about to happen to the characters, it makes it, to my mind, less sad than when it hits you unexpectedly three-quarters of the way through the book. That’s not to say that I wasn’t affected by this, because I was – I think Gayle Forman is just a lovely, lovely writer (I looooove Just One Day & Just One Year), and she did a better job at making Mia’s family feel real to me, and at making me feel like the parents had real lives of their own that were interesting entirely apart from their children, than possibly any YA book I’ve ever read. This was, of course, necessary if she wanted to make the loss of said parents have the appropriate amount of emotional impact (which it did), but I was just impressed at how such a short book could convey such a complex web of relationships in a way that felt complete. I’m looking forward to seeing how this story continues in the sequel (and also looking forward to the POV shift that said book apparently contains).

Started out really well but then midway started to drag . Kept reading only to find out what Mia did. Could have just went to the last page and found that out ! Found this to be not one of the Author's better books , she has written better .

If I Stay was new and fresh but dragged on despite its short amount of pages and to say the least; confusing. In a sea of teen novels where there's a terrible society and needs to be fixed by one individual, this novel delves into the life of a young girl who got into a car crash, goes through a coma and for reminisces on the people she loves. Although the writing was superb and the storyline was original, it didn't quite sit with me right that the protagonist, Mia Hills story, centres around her career and wanting to stay with her boyfriend. It's unclear to me as to why she would put her boyfriend over her future successful career. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth that this young woman gets into a horrific incident and her two options have to be if she wants to be a professional cellist or follow her boyfriend around while he gets to perform and live his musical endeavour. I also wish the story was solely more focused on her parents and her little brother, the ones who grew up with her and shared her blood. Incredible story, original and sweet but would have changed things around to make it less about her throwing her dreams away for a guy. @Moonlightbae of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

The book that I will be reviewing is called If I Stay written by Gayle Forman. This story is about a 17 year old girl named Mia Hall, a gifted cellist who had everything she could possibly want. A loving family, a boyfriend that loves her, amazing friends and a wonderful career ahead of her dedicated to music. What could possibly go wrong? But one day Mia's life takes and unexpected turn when Mia and her family have a terrible accident that leaves Mia the only survivor. When she finds herself in a coma, Mia is now able to watch the actions of the friends and family members that surround her at the hospital. Now, Mia is caught between two worlds; The world of living or the world of the missed and forgotten. Soon Mia is forced to make a life changing decision. One where she can wake up and live with her grandparents and loving boyfriend or to let go of everything and avoid the pain and sadness with living without her mom, dad and little brother. The choice is up to Mia. This story tells people how you control the way you want to live your life and that one decision can make a huge impact on your future ahead of you. I would give this book a 4.5/5 star rating.

After a horrible car crash, seventeen-year-old Mia is stuck in a coma and is hovering around the hospital she’s staying in. Although her physical body is in critical condition and is unconscious, Mia is still very conscious in her spirit form. Mia eventually finds out that during the icy accident no one from her family survived. She now has the choice to either give up or to try to live once again. And that choice is made even harder when Mia’s boyfriend comes in to tell her why she should stay. This was a very emotional novel that would impact readers on a personal level. It explored an interesting concept of being trapped in between life and death. Although at first many of us would choose to live, we get to explore Mia’s past and current circumstances to see it from another perspective. Although I did come for the romance, I was pleasantly surprised with something much more that I absolutely loved reading. Rating:5/5

If I Stay had an interesting concept. Though the idea was good, it wasn't used to its full potential. Most of the material I found quite bland and uncaptivating. I was so disappointed since I had heard and read many wonderful things about the story. I found the characters difficult to relate to, and not quite realistic enough for the story line.

Finished reading this book a few days ago. The book had more details being told than the movie. It's about a girl who loves playing the cello, got into an accident with her family, which doesn't tell how they crashed. She ends up in a hospital and in coma. I am not going to spoil a lot. I feel like this is giving us a reason to stay focus and check your surroundings because you may not ever know what's coming. This book is also filled with love, shocking, sad, and heartbreaking action, that will make you want to read. This can relate to us, when we lose someone or people that we love and how we are going to live on with them.

In this book the main character Mia gets in a car accident causing her to go into a comma where she needs to decide whether she should stay or leave

Jul 20, 2015

Mia has so much in life: a loving family, friends, a boyfriend, musical talent for the cello that will take her to Julliard...but so much of it is taken away in an instant. Mia and her family get into a car accident that kills everyone in her family and leaves her in a coma. But a part of her is still awake, still has to chose whether she wants to wake up, whether she wants to stay, whether this world is a place she still wants to live in.

This book is all about Mia. Getting into a terrible car crash losing all hope and her close family. she's trying to choose if she should stay since she believes she has absolutely, positively nothing to live for. While in a coma can friends and family try to convince her to stay or will she go and continue living with her parents up there. I cannot say anything more. If you must find out I personally would suggest that you read it your self

I read this book because its going to be a movie. To my surprise it was a drag out process for me. I'm not sure if its because I'm an adult reading a teen book but she just took way.... To long to figure out her outcome. Sometimes I just wanted to scream at the book lol.

Aug 05, 2013

In a single moment, everything changes. Seventeen-year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall riding along the snow-wet Oregon road with her family. Then, in a blink, she finds herself watching as her own damaged body is taken from the wreck...

What if you had everything?
A gorgeous boyfriend who was madly in love with you?
Quirky hip parents who got you?
A musical talent that could take you anywhere?
What if your biggest problem in life was choosing which paths to take ?
Follow your first love-music- to New York City?
Or stay with your boyfriend , friends , and family?
What if one day you went for a drive . . .
And in an instant everything changed?
What if suddenly all the other choices were gone?
Except for one - the one that truly ever mattered ?
What would you do?
Stay . . .
If I Stay . . . .
If Mia Stays . . .
