A classic. I enjoyed watching it again after many years. The shots are great, the acting superb.

Grant, Rains and Bergman sometimes worked with mediocre directors, and Hitchcock with mediocre actors -- intentionally or not on the latter's part is hard to say. He sometimes favoured casting for type rather than ability. But in Notorious, all the pieces an audience could possibly want fall into place; skilled actors at the height of their appeal, a cracking, up-to-the-minute script by Hitchcock and Ben Hecht, and direction that I can only describe as passionate. Something about this story of a lost woman, her ugly, betrayed husband, and her betraying, tortured lover touched Hitchcock deeply.

Ok, wonderful big names are involved in making this movie. But let me spoil it for you a little bit.:) Did any of you big fans of this movie noticed that there are no locals ( Brazilians) involved in the movie, it looks like only Americans live in Rio? And if Hitchcock wanted his heroine to flaunt furs, and people bundle in warm coats, why on earth he didn't move the action somewhere to southern Argentina instead. The average coldest temperature even in the middle of winter in Rio de Janeiro is no more than +21C - I checked. Such kind of omissions make movies ridiculous, whoever made them.
I'm OK with the irresponsible treatment of radioactive material - in those times people were really unaware how harmful it could be.

Certainly full of menace and brooding camerawork, and the the sheer star power of Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman lights up the screen, but their romance is forced (as in instantaneous) and the plot sheer hyperbole even for Hitchcock. Of course whenever slimy skulking Nazis go up against apple pie fortitude the ending is already a foregone's the story that matters and in this case it proves a bit hard to swallow. Claude Rains does a believable turn as the insanely jealous Sebastian however while "Madame Konstantin" in the role of his evil mother comes to resemble Goebbels in a skirt. Nice green screen views of Rio too.

One of Hitshcock's best. Full of romantic tension and espionage suspense. Brilliantly done.

I will use this space to say that some reviews give the plot of a movie away. If they don't give the entire plot, is may be enough to make the movie seem boring. I try to say whether I liked or disliked a movie and why. We are not asked to explain the movie or to give key details out. Let's make seeing a DVD a fresh experience. I loved Notorious. Thought Ingrid Bergman was great as an heiress and Cary Grant as an American agent. It is one of Hitchcock's better films. I give it Five Stars and hope in the future reviews will stick to just an "UP" or "Down" method of reviewing movies.

This is my sixth or seventh viewing and I still can't get over the mastery Hitchcock put into ths film. He had the perfect production team and cast. I can't imagine anyone else in any of these roles. For me, this is Ingrid Bergman's best performance and one of the greatest female performances of a Hitchcock film. Cary Grant goes against type and is gorgeous. He shows that he can not be the smooth gentleman. I just love this movie. It is my favourite Hictchcock film and his masterpiece of his 40s era.

In most Hitchcock films, the star of the film is Hitchcok. Not in Notorious. This is Ingrid Bergman's film. No matter what the billing might suggest, this is a story revolving around Alicia, and Ingrid gives the performance of the decade in her role as Alicia. There is no one in the history if the Oscars that was so horrendously robbed as Bergman was for this role. This is her greatest performance and the best of any actress in any Hitchcock film (or any film ever). She is breathtaking. Ingrid uses her greatest asset--that amazing face--to convey so much with just a lift of a brow or harding of the jaw. In this role she has to act a character who is aputting on a performance herself in the movie. The way we can still see the "real" Alicia is the genius of Ingrid's portrayal. The next star of this film is the script. The sparring between Alicia and Devlin (Cary Grant) is brutal, passionate and raw. Ben Hecht is a genius for creating such a gem. Hitchcock--as in all of his films-- has stamped himself in every shot of this movie. His genius in his composition and camera movement is incredible. He seems really restrained in this film conpared to his later works, but the subtlety adds to the beauty of the film. The rest of cast was superb in their roles. Cary Grant is playing against type and Claude Rains brings to life on of the most sympathetic villians in film's history. Another thing about this movie that stands out is the romance. In no other movie has Hitch shown his romantic side more effectively. The scenes between Bergman and Grant are as steamy and sexy as they they come. Never to be achieve again within a Hitchcock film. This is a Hitchcock masterpiece, and for me it is his greatest film. Watch it.

This is a 1946 American thriller directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock.
Ingrid Bergman plays Alicia Huberman, a daughter of a convicted Nazi spy.
Cary Grant plays an American agent T.R. Devlin who infiltrates an organization of Nazi based in Brazil after World War II.
Alicia is now enlisted by Devlin to spy on the Nazi secret ring.
While awaiting the details of her assignment in Rio de Janeiro, Alicia and Devlin fall in love, though his feelings are complicated by his knowledge of her wild past.
When Devlin gets instructions to persuade her to seduce Alex Sebastian (Claude Rains), Devlin tries to convince his superiors that Alicia is not fit for the job.
He puts up a stoic front when he informs Alicia about the mission, choosing duty over love.
Alicia concludes that he was merely pretending to love her as part of his job.
Her espionage work becomes life-threatening after she marries Alex---the most debonair of the Nazi ring.
Thrill, suspense and love---but not sex---certainly make you exciting and trembling.
This is one of the best entertaining flicks.
