I read some reviews complaining that this book didn't live up to its hype. I must be living in a vacuum or something because I heard no hype, didn't know there was a bidding war in the publishing world, etc. I came across this accidentally and had no particular expectations beyond the usual every time I pick up any book belonging in a genre I enjoy: to be entertained, surprised, and made to think. This succeeded on all three counts. This slow-moving story was nonetheless a page-turner (only 2 sittings for me) because I was thoroughly involved in the story. Julia is an 11-year old living in CA with her parents when the earth's rotation inexplicably begins to slow down. Walker, who has a gift for language, does an excellent job with both the soft-core sci fi aspects and the coming-of-age family drama. I really loved this novel until the end. I was disappointed and felt that Walker copped out a bit and didn't have the courage to answer the questions she raised. Still, very very good.
