This might be my favorite Trollope novel. It was darker in theme than others I have read. The character of Zoe was very intriguing. Was she perhaps some sort of non-religious angel, drifting in and out of people's lives and making a difference. On p. 269 she says, "I'll find people who need me." She had a certain naive quality (she didn't know what to do with a dust cloth?!) but seemed to have a deeper wisdom than others, such as being non-judgmental. On p. 268, she says, "I'm older than all of you." Robin answers, "I know." She was just an interesting device. Rural setting was good and excellent depiction of many rural people and study of grief.
