Goodman is an engaging and enthusiastic presenter in the various historical re-creation shows with which she has been involved and this carries over to her written work. This is accessible, well-written and well-researched, including the author's own experiences in re-creation. It's invaluable as a resource for the history of the 'common-folk', who don't normally get a look-in in conventional history work. Considering that a lot of what we do today had its genesis in the Victorian era it's useful to know: if you don't know where you've been, it's hard to see where you're going, to my mind.
