The premise of this book is intriguing, which is why I chose to read it, but most of the text was filled with the inane (and boring) mental chatter of the female protagonist. I found myself disliking her more and more as the "story" (which really wasn't much of a story at all) progressed. Perhaps Alexander McCall Smith should write from the perspective of a man rather than a woman. And perhaps he shouldn't try to imagine what goes on in the mind of a so-called philosopher. And when his story is based on the investigation of a possible "rebirth," maybe he should have the sense to see it through. What a disappointment! And he doesn't write that well either!
