Malick’s return to filmmaking after a twenty-year hiatus is based on James Jones’ novel of the same name, which tells a fictionalized account of the Battle of Mount Austen, part of the Guadalcanal Campaign during World War II. Considered by many critics to be one of the best contemporary war films, it’s also notable for its huge cast of A-list actors, many of whom didn’t make it into the final cut of the movie, or did so in a significantly reduced capacity.
