Lost River is the tenth novel in the chronologically structured Ben Cooper/Diane Fry/Derbyshire Constabulary series. At once it radically differentiates itself from its predecessors in that a great deal of what transpires is set in the menacing concrete jungle of Birmingham concomitantly inhabited by threatening lowlifes of all sorts. The rural/urban divide is front and center. Here Fry confronts and outs those who caused and continue to fuel her ever recurrent, traumatizing nightmare arising a dozen years ago. In terms of revealing Cooper's and (especially) Fry's psychological framework this is the most pivotal offering since the second book Dancing with the Virgins. Its impact is underpinned by the series being read in sequence.
